“To forget how to dig the earth and tend the soil is to forget ourselves.”
- MAHATMA GANDHI
My journey as a farmer began in the year 2006 as I developed interest in kitchen gardens. I thoroughly enjoyed planting my garden fresh on the menu but the real inspiration dawned in the year 2008 as our first born Dhruv S. Mohite stepped on to the racing circuit with his helmet tucked under his little arm. Dhruv was only 8- 10 old and was being advised to include varied concoctions, brews and powders from tinned boxes to increase his stamina and strength. The mother in me went into mutiny mode. I refused all packaged power foods and put him on a diet of super-powerful farm fresh food. And today, after a decade his Insta and FB accounts are laden with success stories without any supplements.
My first step was to stop listening to my farm help who had unflinching faith in traditional methods of farming. Next came books, notes, seminars, workshops and meetings. Slowly but steadily I learnt, experimented and bloomed with every small success. As expected with natural and organic methods the soil fertility improved and we began producing surplus vegetables and fruits. I formed a whatsapp group of Mauli’s, interested in buying weekly supplies. Our prices were fixed for a year and were much less than the market price. Gradually, our circle expanded as taste and quality gained the trust of mother’s around me.
I realized that I was pursuing the most virtuous profession in the world as I delivered organic and chemical free nourishment to folks around me. I do not believe in cultivating flowers or any other crop which we cannot consume directly. And much to the annoyance of trade houses I oppose export of our farm harvest too. I firmly believe and practice the principle to keep the wellbeing of our nation and generation next on priority. Let’s defeat the demons of hunger and malnourishment of our country first and then think about serving the other nations.
We have an open cows shed of native “Khillari” breed. Their Gomutra and Gomaya are the core of our natural farming. We prepare numerous manures, sprays and insect repellents from them. “Dhoop Sticks”, “Dashparni Ark”, “Panchgavya” are some of our latest packaged products made out of Gomaya which have received an incredible response.
Today, Mohite Agro Farms owns a sprawling 35 acres of biodiversity zone/farm land. We have planted fruit trees like Mangoes, Sapota (Chikku), Papaya, Lemon, Pomegranate, Amla, Jamun and Custard Apple. Our Vegetables produce includes Spinach, Fenugreek, three types of Beans, Coriander, Brinjal’s, Tomatoes, Lady finger, Ginger, Corn, Poklaa, Ridged Gourd, Radish, Cucumbers, Green chilies, Curry Leaves, Ginger, Garlic, Lemon grass to name a few. Besides these we produce Khapali Wheat, Jowar, Soyabean, Tuar, Moong, Udid, Rice, Groundnuts, Jaggery and Sugarcane.
Recently, I have coined a brand name called “Paarakhi” (person who has an eye for genuine), which is dedicated to all my mum friends who have encouraged me with their patient and timely feedback. Our brand name is coined from the first names of my mother-in-law, “Parvati” and our daughter “Khyati”. Aai introduced me to this wonderful world of “growing” so it’s my humble homage to her and I have incorporated our daughter’s name because one day, I would love to hand over the soiled baton, curved sickle and priceless contentment to her. I have a long way to go as “Delivering Health” is my dictum.
